Texas police officer Robert Powell has gotten a new job after being fired for stopping NFL player Ryan Moats from seeing his mother-in-law before she died. Stratford Police Chief Winston Dennis said while the former Dallas police officer made a mistake by stopping Moats as the Houston Texans player was racing to visit his dying mother-in-law, Powell deserved a second chance, WFAA-TV of Dallas/Fort Worth reported Thursday. Officer Powell made a mistake, Dennis said of the March incident.
Dallas police officer Mike Powell resigned Wednesday following a controversial traffic stop March 17 when the mother-in-law of an NFL player died of cancer. Powell stopped Houston Texans' running back Ryan Moats for running a red light near a hospital in Plano, Texas.
The former wife of NFL linebacker Zach Thomas says she once was mistreated by Dallas police officer Robert Powell after making an illegal U-turn. Maritza Thomas told a Dallas newspaper that during a traffic stop last July she was handcuffed and spent about 3 hours in jail. This in no way compares to what happened to Ryan Moats and his family, she told The Dallas Morning News.
Houston running back Ryan Moats' mother-in-law died in a hospital while he was getting a traffic ticket as he rushed to be with her, the Houston Chronicle said. Jonetta Collinsworth, 45, a breast cancer patient and the mother of Moats' wife, Tamishia, died March 18 as Officer Robert Powell detained Moats and family members at Baylor Regional Medical Center in Plano, Texas, the newspaper reported Thursday. Citing official records, the newspaper said Officer Powell observed Moats twice rolling his sport utility vehicle through red lights as he approached the hospital early in the morning.
