Jul. 27--Cingular Wireless still is running in first place as the biggest U.S. cellular company, but Verizon Wireless is getting ever closer in the rear-view mirror. Trailing by 6.4 million customers a year ago, Verizon Wireless has cut that lead by a third, to 4.2 million as of June 30.
