Brad Hawpe's three-run homer Tuesday keyed a 14-hit attack for the Colorado Rockies who outlasted San Diego 11-10. Clint Barmes had a two-run inside-the-park homer to help Colorado move five games ahead of San Francisco in the National League wild-card race.
Ryan Spilborghs ended a bizarre 14th inning with a grand slam homer Monday, giving the Colorado Rockies a 6-4 victory over San Francisco. Neither side could score after the fifth inning until they combined to tally eight times in the 14th. Colorado won its third straight over the Giants and expanded its lead over San Francisco to four games in the National League wild-card chase. San Francisco appeared to have wrapped up the win in the top of the 14th with a three-run inning, keyed by triples from Edgar Renteria and Eugenio Velez. Brandon Medders then came on for his third inning of work in hopes of nailing down a San Francisco victory. Medders walked Dexter Fowler to open the inning and, one out later, Justin Miller (2-3) relieved Medders. Chris Iannetta singled Fowler to second and Troy Tulowitzki walked to load the bases.
Jorge De La Rosa held Arizona to one run over seven innings and drove in two runs Monday to help the Colorado Rockies beat the Diamondbacks 10-6. Clint Barmes homered as the second batter of the game Friday and the Colorado Rockies limited San Diego to three hits in downing the Padres 5-3. All three San Diego hits came off Ubaldo Jimenez (7-9), who struck out 10 over seven innings.
Homers by Clint Barmes and Seth Smith accounted for five runs Thursday and Aaron Cook struck out eight to give the Colorado Rockies a 10-1 win over San Diego. The Rockies won their second straight and moved within 1 ½ games of idle San Francisco for the lead in the National League wild-card chase. Cook (9-3) lasted six innings and allowed eight hits, but he gave up only a first-inning run.
