PATIENTS in Hexham have easier access to healthcare following the opening of a new primary care centre in the town. The centre, part of the pounds 28m extension to Hexham General Hospital, houses services previously provided at various different locations, like podiatry and district nursing.

FORMER miner Jackie Harrison is determined not to let his chronic respiratory disease get the better of him. Although he is housebound and needs regular oxygen to help his breathing, he is always ready for a chat and joke with the district nurses who visit regularly to check on his condition.

A NEW clinic in Blyth run by district nurses has treated more than 1,500 patients since it opened at the beginning of the year. The TESA unit offers treatment, education, support and advice to patients needing wound care, ear care, leg ulcer management, continence management and other treatments.
