By Joe Downes IRISH renewable energy companies have vowed to plough E4bn into offshore windpower after being promised a guaranteed price yesterday for the electricity they produce.
By AINE HEGARTY A NATIONAL debate on nuclear power in Ireland will prove the importance of renewable energy, it was claimed last night.
Energy Minister Eamon Ryan is due to announce details of the plan today. The metres, which allow people to easily see how much electricity they are using, will initially be tested in 25,000 homes across the country. Mr Ryan claims the scheme could eventually cut domestic energy use by around 10%.
The grant will go towards funding a range of new research projects, along with creating a team of scientists who will address the sustainable development of Ireland's fishing industry.
John Gormley has been appointed Environment Minister, while Eamon Ryan takes over at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.Mr Gogarty says his priorities are to implement a carbon levy, reform local government and introduce grants for the insulation of homes.
