THE public are invited to Ayrshire and Arran's autumn stroke meeting. It's being held at Ayr Hospital's MacDonald Education Centre on Tuesday, October 7. The meeting has been organised by the Managed Clinical Network and will run from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.

By GRAEME MURRAY VANDALS who set off fire hydrants across Glasgow have been warned they are putting lives at risk. More than 50 hydrants in the city had to be turned off by Scottish Water since Tuesday afternoon after this week's warm, sunny weather .

PARENTS are campaigning to save small rural schools under threat in an amalgamation plan. Schools with 32 to 67 pupils would be closed and the youngsters sent to schools servicing larger towns, villages and many small communities, as revealed by the Evening Times last month.

TWO security guards survived being trapped in a van under water after they veered off the road and plunged into a reservoir yesterday. Specialist water rescue crews raced to the scene at Oude Dam Reservoir near Oban, Argyll, and managed to stop the van sinking further.
