News - Edinson Volquez
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Aaron Harang will miss the balance of the 2009 baseball season after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. The Reds said on their Web site the procedure followed an examination Saturday while they were in Pittsburgh.
Edinson Volquez, an All-Star pitcher for Cincinnati last season, will miss the rest this season and likely much of the next following Tommy John surgery Monday. The Reds said doctors performed the ligament-replacement operation after determining the right-hander had a torn ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow of his throwing arm that couldn't be fixed with the less intrusive arthroscopic surgery. Volquez likely will need a recovery period of 10-12 months. Volquez, who has been on the disabled list since June 2 after experiencing tendinitis in the elbow, went through the 90-minute procedure Monday after experiencing stiffness in the elbow Friday during a simulated game that was part of his rehab assignment. Volquez won a career-high 17 games and earned All-Star honors for the Reds in 2008.
Laynce Nix doubled in two runs and the Cincinnati Reds used five relievers after starter Edinson Volquez was hurt Monday in a 5-3 win over St. Louis. Ryan Hanigan scored twice for the Reds, who ended a six-game road losing streak.
Brandon Phillips had three hits, including a homer, and wound up with six RBI Tuesday, fueling the Cincinnati Reds' 7-0 win over Florida. Edinson Volquez (4-2) gave up three hits and four walks in eight scoreless innings.
Edinson Volquez allowed a lone hit over eight innings Wednesday and Adam Rosales had two RBI, giving Cincinnati a 3-0 victory over Houston. The only Houston hit of the game was a two-out double in the first inning by Miguel Tejada.
