Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer captured the women's title Saturday at the Estoril (Portugal) Open with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Russia's Ekaterina Makarova. Wickmayer, the 88th-ranked women's player, captured her first singles title.
Ekaterina Makarova advanced to her second WTA Tour final in as many weeks Friday with a solid victory in the clay-court Estoril Open in Portugal. Makarova, who played in the final last week in Morocco, ran by eighth-seeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-3, 6-1 in 57 minutes.
Defending champion Maria Kirilenko was among three highly seeded players failing to advance in quarterfinal play at the $220,000 Estoril Open in Portugal. In addition to the second-seeded Kirilenko, No. 3-seeded Sorana Cirstea and fourth-seeded Sabine Lisicki were eliminated.
Top-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues blasted Ekaterina Makarova 6-1, 6-1 Saturday to capture the Moroccan Grand Prix at Fes for her ninth career title. Medina Garrigues, a native of Valencia, Spain, was the runner-up to Argentina's Gisela Dulko in last year's final.
