Marat Safin defeated No. 5-seeded Philipp Petzschner Tuesday, advancing to the second round of the $608,500 Thailand Open. Safin finished strong in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win over Petzschner.
American Wayne Odesnik came from behind to win a first-round match Sunday in the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington. Odesnik eliminated Chilean Paul Capdeville, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at the Fitzgerald Tennis Center and will next play Russian Igor Andreev. Another opening-round winner was Latvian Ernests Gulbis, who also needed three sets to get by American Kevin Kim.
Sam Querrey, who lost in the finals of his last two tournaments, moved past the first round of the Los Angeles Tennis Open Wednesday with a straight-sets win. Querrey defeated Denis Istomin in the last of the first-round matches 6-2, 6-0.
American John Isner knocked off Germany's Benjamin Becker 7-6 (8) and 7-6 (3) in the toughest match of Tuesday's opening round at the LA Tennis Open. Third-seeded American Sam Querrey was among Monday's first-round winners at the $450,000 Indianapolis Tennis Championships. Querrey, 21, beat Frenchman Arnaud Clement 6-3, 6-4 in one hour, 13 minutes.
