Sprint Nextel was in a crisis as Daniel Hesse took over the chief executive's job last December. Sprint was reeling from an ill-fated merger with Nextel. Customers were leaving in droves.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. _ Sprint Nextel's long-anticipated deal to finance its high-speed WiMax wireless network appears to be imminent. Sources at companies involved in ongoing discussions have told The Kansas City Star a formal announcement could come as soon as this week.
