Rory Sabbatini, passed over by Greg Norman for the International Presidents Cup team, grabbed a share of the first-round lead Thursday at the BMW Championship. Sabbatini shot a 5-under 66 at the Cog Hill Golf Club course to tie Steve Marino for the top spot in the third of the four PGA Tour playoff events. Bo Van Pelt and Marc Leishman were tied for third at 67 and Tiger Woods, who has slipped to second place in the FedEx Cup points race behind Steve Stricker, was among those tied for fifth at 68. The race for the FedEx Cup and the first prize of $10 million has been reduced to 70 players and only 30 of them will survive to take part in the Tour Championship. Sabbatini began this week in 36th place and Marino is in 26th place.
Heath Slocum's clutch par-saving putt on the final hole of The Barclays Classic shoved him up 138 spots Monday in the men's world golf rankings. Slocum dropped in a touchy 21-foot putt and ended up one stroke ahead of Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington, Steve Stricker and Ernie Els and collected his first PGA Tour victory in nearly four years. Slocum entered The Barclays ranked 197th in the world.
Heath Slocum rolled in a 21-foot par putt on the final hole Sunday and won The Barclays tournament in New Jersey by a stroke over Tiger Woods and three others. Slocum finished with a 4-under-par 67 and an overall score of 9-under 275.
Paul Goydos and Steve Marino both shot 3-under 68 Saturday to share the 54-hole lead at PGAS's The Barclays. Goydos and Marino finished the third round at 9-under 204, two strokes ahead of Fredrik Jacobson (68) and second-round leader Webb Simpson (72).
Rookie Webb Simpson shot a 3-under 68 in difficult scoring conditions Friday and became the surprising 36-hole leader at The Barclays. Simpson has played in 30 tournaments this year without a victory and began the first of the PGA Tour's four playoff events ranked 85th on the FedEx Cup points list.
