Building a barrage across the Humber as an alternative to abandoning flood defences along the estuary is a non-starter, it has been claimed. The idea of a giant barrage spanning the estuary was first floated 20 years ago. Two potential sites, at Spurn Point and Stone Creek, were looked at.

By Alexandra Wood The Environment Agency has said while it can protect 99 per cent of the people living around the estuary, it will not be able to maintain the defences for some properties in sparsely-populated areas.Officials have said in 10 to 20 years they may have to issue "withdrawal" notices ceasing to maintain defences to 668 properties in the Sunk Island area, 62 around Kilnsea and 10 at Skeffling.
