Senate Democrats called for a perjury investigation against Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Thursday and subpoenaed top presidential aide Karl Rove in a deepening political and legal clash with the Bush administration.

By Deb Riechmann ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER WASHINGTON -- A little-known federal investigative unit has launched a probe into allegations of illegal political activity within the executive branch, including a White House office led by President Bush's close adviser, Karl Rove.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino Friday said as many as 5 million White House e-mails may have been lost. Perino told the daily press briefing the loss may have occurred when the White House migrated from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Outlook in 2002 and 2003.
