Ross Gload drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth Tuesday and the Florida bullpen was almost perfect in bringing the Marlins a 2-1 win over the New York Mets. The Mets -- having learned earlier in the day that pitching star Johan Santana would have surgery for bone spurs in his left elbow and would miss the rest of the season -- lost their fourth straight game. Sean West (5-5) held the Mets to a run on six hits over six innings and the Florida relief corps put down nine of 10 batters the rest of the way. Leo Nunez needed just 10 pitches to retire the side in the ninth for his 15th save. Both sides scored a run in the fourth and the Marlins produced the winning tally in the fifth off Nelson Figueroa (1-3). Jeremy Hermida singled to open the fifth and moved to second on a sacrifice by West.
Cody Ross drove in three runs with a pair of doubles, and Jeremy Hermida belted a two-run home run for the Florida Marlins Sunday in an 8-1 rout of Arizona. Hanley Ramirez added an RBI and scored twice for the Marlins. Josh Johnson (8-2) was the winner, allowing a run and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Yuniesky Betancourt drove in two runs and scored two Saturday in the Seattle Mariners' 7-3 inter-league win over Arizona. Betancourt had two hits, including a two-run double in the Mariners' three-run eighth inning, when he also scored a run.
Jason Vargas turned in another outstanding effort Friday and Seattle gave him enough run support to lift the Mariners past the Los Angeles Angels 5-2. Vargas (2-0) was called up from the minors in early May and prior to Friday had allowed only three earned runs in 21 innings over three starts and two relief appearances. He gave up four runs on two hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Angels and evened his career record over parts of four major league seasons at 8-8. Three Seattle relievers allowed one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings, with David Aardsma collecting his seventh save. The Mariners took a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI singles from Ichiro Suzuki and Adrian Beltre along with a sacrifice fly from Ken Griffey Jr. Jose Lopez hit a solo homer for Seattle in the eighth. John Lackey (1-1) worked 7 1/3 innings in the loss.
Jose Lopez stroked a bases-loaded single to the wall in left field in the bottom of the 12th inning Friday, lifting Seattle to a 2-1 win over San Francisco. Lopez, who went 2-for-6, also drove in the Mariners' other run to tie the game in the sixth. Aaron Rowand homered to start the game to account for the Giants' only run. Giants starter Randy Johnson was denied his 299th win.
