Yankees catcher Jorge Posada and Toronto pitcher Jesse Carlson received three-game suspensions Wednesday for their parts in a benches-clearing incident. During Tuesday's 10-4 Toronto rout, Posada elbowed Carlson after he scored on Brett Gardner's double in the bottom of the eighth. During the at-bat, Carlson threw behind Posada, continuing a pattern of seemingly errant pitches by both clubs. Carlson later said something Posada didn't like, and when Posada ran towards him, both benches cleared. No punches were thrown, but in the pile of bodies, Carlson suffered a knot on his forehead. I'm not upset with it, Manager Cito Gaston said on the Blue Jays' Web site.
A brawl between Yankees and Blue Jays players cleared the benches Tuesday before Toronto went on to win 10-4. New York's Mark Melancon hit Aaron Hill in the back with a pitch in the eighth inning.
Star left-hander CC Sabathia of the New York Yankees left his start against the Florida Marlins Sunday with tightness in his left biceps. Manager Joe Girardi decided to lift Sabathia in the bottom of the second inning after the burly 6-foot-7 inch, 290-pound had thrown just 28 pitches.
Andy Pettitte allowed three hits over seven innings Friday and chipped in an RBI double, lifting the New York Yankees to a 5-1 inter-league win over Florida. Pettitte (7-3) struck out seven and walked nobody.
