Three-time runner-up Roger Federer of Switzerland led Thursday's men's winners at the French Open tennis tournament, despite losing seven straight games. Federer, the second seed, eliminated Argentina's Jose Acasuso 7-6 (10-8), 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, winning 12 of the second-round match's final 15 games.
Jose Acasuso, seeking his first tournament triumph of the year after two close calls, easily advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday at the Copa Telmex. The fifth-seeded Acasuso was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Fabio Fognini, setting up a quarterfinal meeting with Oscar Hernandez. Acasuso did not play in the Australian Open, but he reached the finals of the Movistar Open and semifinals of the Brazil Open.
Tommy Robredo and Thomaz Bellucci took different paths Friday to reach the championship match of the Brazil Open. Robredo, seeded second, had an easy time, ousting fourth-seeded Jose Acasuso 6-2, 6-1 in the clay-court event. Bellucci, however, had to survive two tiebreaks before defeating Frederico Gil 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4). Acasuso missed out in his bid to reach his second straight final.
Top-seeded Fernando Gonzalez won the Movistar Open in Chile for the fourth time Sunday, topping Argentine Jose Acasuso in straight sets. The Chilean player won 6-1, 6-3. Gonzalez also won the event in 2002, 2004 and 2008. The title was the 11th of Gonzalez's ATP career.
Top-seeded Chilean Fernando Gonzalez and fourth-seeded Argentine Jose Acasuso will meet Sunday in the final of the Movistar Open at Vina del Mar, Chile. Defending champion Gonzalez beat Argentine Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 6-2 in their semifinal match Saturday.
