Two-time defending league MVP Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist Thursday in carrying Washington to a season-opening 4-1 win over Boston. It the was the first regular-season game completed among the four that were on the NHL schedule Thursday. Ovechkin led the NHL with 56 goals last season and he began the 2009-10 campaign by assisting on a power-play score by Brooks Laich just 2:45 into the new campaign. The Capitals took a 2-0 lead in the second period on Ovechkin's first goal.

Alex Ovechkin's 48th goal of the season put Washington in front in the second period Thursday and the Capitals held on to down Philadelphia 2-1. Washington won its fifth straight road game, getting 35 saves from Jose Theodore.

Alexander Semin and Nicklas Backstrom scored shootout goals Wednesday to bring Washington a 4-3 win over Montreal. Semin scored in the first round of the shootout when the puck fell out of Carey Price's pads and into the net.

The Los Angeles Kings, led by Anze Kopitar's two goals and one assist Thursday, skated to a 5-4 win over the Washington Capitals. With just 13 seconds gone in the second period, Kopitar's 14th goal of the season -- the first of three second-period goals against Washington goalie Jose Theodore -- gave LA a 2-1 lead.

Jose Theodore made 28 saves Friday to record the 27th shutout of his career and bring Washington a 3-0 win over Montreal. Theodore earned 23 of his shutouts while playing eight seasons with Montreal. Tomas Fleischmann, Alexander Ovechkin and David Steckel scored to help the Capitals win their second straight after enduring a three-game losing streak. Ovechkin extended his points streak to 10 games, during which he has 11 goals and 11 assists.
