Juan Uribe's solo homer touched off a six-run seventh inning Friday that lifted San Francisco to a 7-2 victory over San Diego. Reports circulated during the game that the Padres would announce on Saturday they had fired General Manager Kevin Towers.
Matt Cain gave up three hits in eight scoreless innings Sunday, leading the San Francisco Giants to a 5-1 win over the Chicago Cubs. Cain (14-7) walked two batters and struck eight on the way to ending a three-start losing streak. Reliever Sergio Romo yielded a run and two hits before closer Brian Wilson fanned Reed Johnson for the final out to earn his 37th save. Eli Whiteside led San Francisco with two RBI doubles.
Jake Fox had two hits and two RBI Saturday, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 6-2 win over San Francisco. His first hit was a two-run single with no outs and the bases loaded in the top of the third. Juan Uribe hit a two-run homer Wednesday, San Francisco benefited from two unearned runs and the Giants defeated Arizona 5-2. San Francisco remained tied with Atlanta for second place in the chase for the National League wild-card berth, four games behind Colorado. The Giants had allowed 32 runs in their previous four games, but got a well-pitched contest Wednesday from starter Jonathan Sanchez and four relievers.
Barry Zito turned in a solid seven innings while four Giants chipped in two RBI apiece in San Francisco's 10-2 drubbing of Colorado Tuesday. Zito (10-12) gave up two runs on five hits and struck out nine to pull the Giants to within two games of Colorado in the National League wild-card chase. Juan Uribe, Travis Ishikawa, Bengie Molina and Aaron Rowand each had two RBI as the Giants outhit the Rockies 10-5. Ubaldo Jimenez (13-11) took the loss for only the second time in his past dozen starts.
