News - Kevin Bieksa
IRVINE, Calif., June 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As hockey fans prepare for the first game of the Stanley Cup finals, Vancouver Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa has been named the top Rising Sports Star to watch in the month of June.
Roberto Luongo stopped 28 shots and Mats Sundin, Alexander Edler and Kevin Bieksa scored for Vancouver Saturday night in a 3-1 win over San Jose. The Canucks won their fourth straight game, their eighth out of nine and their 12th out of 14. The Sharks got a power-play goal from Joe Thornton in their fourth straight loss.
Henrik Sedin scored the last of Vancouver's three third-period goals Thursday night, finishing off a rally that gave the Canucks a 4-3 victory over Phoenix. The Coyotes took a 3-1 lead into the third period, but Vancouver came back to win its fourth straight game.
Alex Burrows beat Cam Ward with a backhander with 1:22 to go Tuesday and his shorthanded goal lifted Vancouver to a 4-3 win over Carolina. Burrows came up with the game-winner while teammate Mattias Ohlund was in the penalty box for a restraining minor.
Jonathon Kalinski's first NHL goal in the second period proved the game-winner Tuesday in Philadelphia's 3-2 victory over Vancouver. Kalinski's career score came when he knocked in a misguided Josh Gratton pass from the slot 2:36 into the period. The Flyers also got a goal from Jeff Carter -- his league-leading 27th -- and Scott Hartnell. Martin Biron stopped 29 shots as the Flyers ended a two-game losing streak and extended their unbeaten streak in Vancouver to 14 games over nearly 20 years. Philadelphia has not lost in British Columbia since a 5-3 loss Jan.
