Stauffer (3-6) gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out five, and Heath Bell got his 32nd save with a scoreless ninth. David Eckstein and Kevin Kouzmanoff both had first-inning RBI doubles for the Padres. Livan Hernandez (7-9) went the distance for the Nationals, yielding three runs on seven hits over eight innings to take the loss -- Washington's fourth straight setback. Everth Cabrera opened the bottom of the first with a bunt single and scored on Eckstein's double.
Clayton Richard threw six shutout innings and struck out six Friday in San Diego's 4-0 victory over St. Louis. It marked the Padres' first win over the Cardinals in 11 tries. St. Louis entered the contest having won 11 of its last 13 games. But Richard and four relievers cooled the Cards.
