Texas Rangers outfielder Marlon Byrd was named the American League Player of the Week Monday. Byrd batted .320 while tying for the AL lead with three homers and a league-high 11 RBI during the seven-day period. Byrd's best day of the week was in a 15-3 win over Tampa Bay Saturday, when he hit two home runs -- including his sixth career grand slam -- while driving in five runs. Byrd, 32, won his second career weekly honor.
Marlon Byrd hit two home runs, had four RBI and paced a 17-hit attack Thursday that propelled the Texas Rangers to an 11-1 whipping of Minnesota. The Rangers remained a game behind Boston in the American League wild-card race and inched within 5 ½ games of the Los Angeles Angels for the lead in the AL West.
