Melinda Czink of Hungary dropped the opening set but came back to down Czech Lucie Safarova Sunday in the title match of the Bell Challenge in Canada. Czink's 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win was her first in WTA singles competition. It feels great. I haven't really processed it yet but I will, Czink said.
Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic and Melinda Czink of Hungary will meet Sunday in the final of the women's Bell Challenge. The fourth-seeded Safarova beat Germany's Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-2 and Czink, seeded fifth, beat Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak 6-3, 6-3 in Saturday's semifinals. It will be Safarova's first final of 2009.
Fifth-seeded Hungarian Melinda Czink and American veteran Jill Craybas were among opening-round winners Monday at the women's Bell Challenge. Czink beat Australian Monique Adamczak 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) and the 35-year-old sixth-seeded Craybas beat fellow American Laura Granville 6-0, 6-1. This week's top seed is Russian Nadia Petrova, who defeated American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in last year's finale. Petrova will open defense of her title against American Carly Gullickson, who was a mixed doubles champ at the U.S.
