The University of Memphis was found guilty Thursday of major violations in men's basketball and women's golf, the NCAA infractions committee said. The Tigers' must forfeit every victory in its 38-2 2007-2008 basketball season under coach John Calipari that ended in the national title game, which the Tigers lost to Kansas in overtime. The team must also return the money associated with the 2008 NCAA championship tournament, the committee said. The penalties followed allegations Derrick Rose, now a point guard for the Chicago Bulls, had played the season while academically ineligible because his SAT score was ruled invalid, The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal reported. The penalties also include a reduction of scholarships for the women's golf program, whose former coach was found guilty of providing extra benefits to players, the Commercial Appeal said. Former Memphis Grizzly Antonio Burks was in critical condition Tuesday after being shot by robbers during a South Memphis craps game, police said. Burks, 29, was hit in the stomach Monday evening and taken to a hospital by a passerby. Police said another man was also shot in the stomach during the stick-up that occurred in the back yard of a home.

The Commercial Appeal reported Wednesday the NCAA has accused the Memphis basketball program of major violations. The Memphis newspaper said that during the 2007-08 season, the school was involved in knowing fraudulence or misconduct, concerning an SAT exam taken by a player. The newspaper quoted the NCAA's report to Memphis as saying the player in question suited up only for the 2007-08 season.

Assistant Coach Josh Pastner, 31, has been named to succeed John Calipari as head basketball coach at the University of Memphis. Calipari, who had been Memphis coach for nine years, has switched to the University of Kentucky. Pastner, who was Calipari's assistant this past season, was an assistant to Lute Olsen at Arizona between 2003-08. Pastner takes over a program that went 33-4 last season under Calipari.
