Ryan Dempster pitched a five-hit shutout Tuesday to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dempster (11-8) walked two and struck out six in recording his 10th career complete game and third career shutout.
Jody Gerut's go-ahead grand slam Thursday propelled the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-4 victory against the Chicago Cubs. Gerut's only hit, his seventh homer this season, erased a 2-1 deficit with two out in the top of the fourth inning. Mike Rivera hit a two-run double and Mike Cameron a sacrifice fly for the Brewers, who have won five of seven. Winner Dave Bush (5-7) gave up four runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Koyie Hill and Micah Hoffpauir each drove in two runs Wednesday, powering the Chicago Cubs' 8-5 win over Pittsburgh that capped a three-game sweep. Hoffpauir hit a solo homer and a sacrifice fly. Hill's two-run single expanded Chicago's lead to 6-2 with two outs in the top of the seventh. Four other Cubs also drove in runs. Winner Carlos Zambrano (8-6) gave up two runs on eight hits and three walks in six innings.
