Mark Giordano scored the first of Calgary's three opening-period goals Thursday and the Flames held on down the stretch to defeat Vancouver 5-3. After taking a 3-0 lead after one period, Calgary saw the Canucks fight back to within 4-3 on a goal by Alexandre Burrows just 41 seconds into the third. Miikka Kiprusoff was perfect in goal the rest of the way, however, en route to a 37-save performance.
Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 43 shots Monday and the Chicago Blackhawks beat Calgary 4-1 to take their first playoff series since 1996. Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 19 of 20 shots Saturday and the Chicago Blackhawks took a 3-2 series lead with a 5-1 win over the Calgary Flames. The Blackhawks basically settled the issue when Brent Seabrook (power play), Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg all scored goals in the first period.
Eric Nystrom scored the go-ahead goal with 6:56 to play Wednesday and Calgary went on to even its playoff series with a wild 6-4 win over Chicago. The Flames let a three-goal lead get away, but came back to tie the series at 2-2 and set up a pivotal fifth game that will be hosted by Chicago on Saturday.
