Alexander Semin had two goals and one assist Saturday to pace the Washington Capitals in a 6-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Alex Ovechkin had a goal and two assists for the reigning Southeast Division champion Capitals, who were coming off a season-opening 4-1 victory over Boston Thursday.

Toronto had three first-period goals and Martin Gerber made 47 saves Tuesday, paving the way to a 4-1 Maple Leafs win over New Jersey. Mikhail Grabovski, Jeff Hamilton, Christian Hanson and John Mitchell all scored for the Maple Leafs, who had lost four of their previous five games.

Mark Recchi's 18th and 19th goals of the season Saturday helped the Boston Bruins win a wild 7-5 contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The contest was tied 3-3 after the first period but Boston scored four times in the second to build a 7-4 lead.

The Toronto Maple Leafs, led by Alexei Ponikarovsky's two goals and two assists Saturday, recorded a 5-2 win over the slumping Montreal Canadiens. Ponikarovsky scored his 20th and 21st goals in the second period, one on the power play, and assisted on first period goals by Nikolai Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski. Jason Blake scored his 25th goal of the season on the power play at 4:21 of the third.

Stephen Weiss had a goal and an assist Thursday night, helping the Florida Panthers halt a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Toronto. Ville Peltonen and Richard Zednik also scored for the Panthers and Tomas Vokoun made 37 saves. Florida swept the four-game season series from the Maple Leafs. Florida reached 80 points for the season and is just one point out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
