Julie and Michael Schmidt said their first daughter, Sydney, was born after 36 hours of labor two years ago, so they assumed they would have plenty of time to drive from their East Amherst, N.Y., home to Sisters Hospital -- 16 miles away -- when Julie went into labor with their second child at 3 a.m.
