By ANDERSON, Charles Two secondary schools in the Nelson region will have the opportunity to move their students into the workforce more quickly. Minister of Education Chris Carter announced last week that a further 56 schools in New Zealand will be offered the Youth Apprenticeships Scheme.

Six Nelson schools are this week helping to support some of the world's poorest people. Nayland College, Hampden St School, Lower Moutere School, Riwaka School, Motueka High School and Murchison Area School are selling $2 woven "friendship bracelets" to raise funds for Volunteer Service Abroad.

Motueka High School was one of the first schools in the country to pilot the Gateway work placement course eight years ago. Students who participate in Gateway can gain unit standards to help them achieve NCEA credits.
