Mike Napoli had two hits Sunday, including a solo homer, to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a regular season-ending 5-3 win over the Oakland Athletics. The homer, Napoli's 20th of the season, drew the Angels within 2-1 leading off the top of the third. Bobby Abreu, Torii Hunter and Kendry Morales each drove in a run, one run scored on Craig Breslow's sixth-inning balk, and Erick Aybar had three hits for the AL West champion Angels, who carry a three-game sweep into the AL Division Series against Boston Thursday. The winner was starter Joe Saunders (16-7). Kevin Jepsen earned his first save despite giving up a run and two hits in the ninth. Oakland's Eric Patterson and Cliff Pennington had two hits and one RBI apiece.
Brad Ziegler struck out Kelly Shoppach with the potential tying run on second base Friday, preserving Oakland's 2-1 victory over Cleveland. The Athletics won their fifth in a row, taking a shutout into the ninth inning before Ziegler picked up his seventh save. Shin-Soo Choo singled with one out in the ninth and scored on a two-out double by Matt LaPorta. Shoppach, with a chance to send the game into extra innings, looked at a called third strike on a 1-2 pitch. Nomar Garciaparra doubled home one of Oakland's runs in the second and Mark Ellis had an RBI single later in the inning. Brett Anderson (10-10) struck out 10 and allowed four hits over six innings to get the victory. The loss went to David Huff (10-8).
Fernando Rodney struck out Adam Kennedy in the ninth Friday with the tying run on third, allowing Detroit to hold on for a 3-2 win over Oakland. The Tigers increased their lead over the Chicago White Sox to 3 1/2 games in the American League Central. Ryan Raburn twice gave Detroit the lead with solo homers, one in the first and another in the third. Clete Thomas singled in a run in the sixth to give the Tigers a 3-1 advantage, and Oakland climbed within one on an RBI double by Rajai Davis in the seventh. Edwin Jackson, who allowed both Oakland runs in six innings, got the win, but he and the Tigers needed a scary save from Rodney. Jack Cust singled off Rodney to lead off the ninth, and Tommy Everidge sacrificed Cust to second.
The Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 Sunday on a walk-off solo home run by Mark Ellis. Ellis, who went 2-for-3 in the game, connected on a two-out fastball off Bobby Jenks (2-4) who had come in to pitch the ninth. Scott Hairston, Nomar Garciaparra and Rajai Davis each had a pair of hits for the A's. Andrew Bailey (5-3) got the win by pitching the top of the ninth in relief of starter Trevor Cahill, who held the Sox to two runs on six hits in six-plus innings. Scott Podsednik and Jim Thome drove in Chicago's two runs. Oakland tied the contest 2-2 in the eighth.
Alexei Ramirez led off the 10th inning with a home run Friday, giving the Chicago White Sox an 8-7 victory over Oakland. The White Sox blew an early 6-0 lead and had to come back from a run down to force extra innings, then won it on the 14th homer of the year for Ramirez. Chicago stayed within 2 1/2 games of Detroit for the lead in the American League Central after the Tigers blanked Kansas City 1-0 earlier in the evening. Craig Breslow (5-6) came on as the sixth Oakland pitcher of the game and got an 0-2 count on Ramirez to start the 10th.
