Campaigning officially kicked off in Ukraine on 2 August for an early general election due on 30 September. The agreement to hold the election was seen as a compromise between Ukraine's two feuding leaders, President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych.

Ukrainian parliamentary speaker Oleksandr Moroz has accused President Viktor Yushchenko of "spearheading a campaign against the constitution and parliament" in the opening speech on the first day of parliament's session after the summer recess. He also accused Yushchenko of power usurpation.
