News - Omar Infante
The Atlanta Braves have lost leadoff hitter Omar Infante for six to eight weeks because of a broken bone in his left hand. The versatile infielder got hit by a 91-mile-per-hour fastball thrown by Colorado reliever Manny Corpas in the bottom of the sixth inning in Atlanta's 12-4 rout of the Rockies Wednesday. It's a tough loss losing him because he can play everywhere, especially center field, Braves manager Bobby Cox said on the team's Web site.
Omar Infante touched off a four-run fifth inning with a two-run double Friday and the Atlanta Braves waited out a long rain delay to defeat Houston 7-2. The teams were locked in a 2-2 tie going into the fifth on a wet night, but Atlanta batted around in that inning and scored four times against Mike Hampton (1-2). The game was stopped in the seventh inning and finally allowed to resume en route to a post-midnight finish. Derek Lowe (3-1) got the win by allowing two runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings. Matt Diaz opened the Atlanta fifth with a single and moved to second on a walk to Jordan Schafer.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Detroit Tigers smacked 27 hits to tie a team record, with Carlos Pena going 6-for-6 with two home runs in a 17-7 rout over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. Pena matched the club mark for hits in a game, sharing the accomplishment with Ty Cobb and two others.
