Griselda Aranzacu was puzzled when she noticed her slender neighbor developing a bulging tummy that would repeatedly appear and vanish. She suspected Nancy Ortiz was pregnant after a visit to her house last summer, but didn't want to pry.
Some estimates suggest more than 50 infants are abandoned each day in the United States. Theories abound about why a woman would desert a newborn in some public place -- or worse -- without knowing whether her child will live or die.
By GARANCE BURKE OROSI, Calif. - The first newborn was discovered swaddled in a blanket on a park bench, an umbilical cord still hanging from his tiny body. Then, at neat 11-month intervals, two more abandoned babies were found in parked pickup trucks in the same neighborhood.
