AU Chairman and Tanzanian President Kikwete has urged the Kenyan political class to show goodwill and support the implementation of the powersharing deal signed today between President Kibaki and his political rival Raila Odinga.

Mediators urge Kenya's Kibaki, Odinga to rescue talks NAIROBI, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Mediators trying to resolve the political crisis in Kenya on Monday urged President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga to rescue talks after negotiators reached a deadlock on Monday.

Former U.N. leader Kofi Annan, briefing Kenyan lawmakers, said he ruled out a recount of the violence-triggering re-election of Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki. Annan also said the situation in Kenya was too volatile for a new election for at least a year, the BBC reported Tuesday.

Riot police patrolled towns and cities in Kenya following pledges from the Orange Democratic Movement to stage three days of protests. Eric Kiraithe, a police spokesman, said protests are illegal under the current security situation in Kenya. Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters.
