Former U.N. leader Kofi Annan, briefing Kenyan lawmakers, said he ruled out a recount of the violence-triggering re-election of Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki. Annan also said the situation in Kenya was too volatile for a new election for at least a year, the BBC reported Tuesday.
Riot police patrolled towns and cities in Kenya following pledges from the Orange Democratic Movement to stage three days of protests. Eric Kiraithe, a police spokesman, said protests are illegal under the current security situation in Kenya. Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters.
