Craig Anderson stopped 35 shots for his eighth career shutout Saturday when the Colorado Avalanche beat Vancouver 3-0. Wojtek Wolski and Paul Stastny each had a goal and an assist and Darcy Tucker scored the other goal for the Avalanche, who opened the season with two straight wins for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
Wojtek Wolski put Colorado scored twice, his first goal putting Colorado in front to stay Thursday, leading the Avalanche to a 5-2 decision over San Jose. The season-opening victory came after Colorado had honored longtime captain Joe Sakic by retiring his sweater No. 19 in a pre-game ceremony.
Colorado Avalanche captain Joe Sakic retired Thursday after a 20-year NHL career during which he played on two Stanley Cup championship teams. Sakic, 40, the face of the franchise, spent his entire 20-year NHL career with Colorado or the Quebec Nordiques.
John-Michael Liles's goal 42 seconds into overtime Saturday night boosted the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-2 win over Edmonton. Liles also had two assists -- both on power-play goals by Darcy Tucker and Paul Stastny -- and Peter Budaj stopped 18 shots for Colorado, which has won three of its last four games following a six-game losing streak. Robert Nilsson and Sheldon Souray scored for the Oilers, who lost their third straight overtime decision.
Rich Peverley scored the game-deciding goal and added an assist Tuesday, handing the Atlanta Thrashers a 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche. Tobias Enstrom added a goal and an assist, and Ilya Kovalchuk and Marty Reasoner also scored for Atlanta. Kari Lehtonen made 30 saves in the win.
