PHILADELPHIA, April 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Philadelphia Zoo announced today that GDF SUEZ Energy Resources, the retail energy business of GDF SUEZ Energy North America, will supply its electricity for the next two years, beginning with 25 percent of the Zoo's electricity consumption offset by renewable energy certificates (RECs).

In an effort to save many endangered species in their country, Rio de Janeiro’s zoo has been taking in a collection of animals in order to become a maternity ward for many of them that have never been born in captivity.

Old age has claimed another animal at the Philadelphia Zoo. Twigga, who at 29 was one of the oldest giraffes in the nation, was euthanized Thursday at the zoo, her home since 1979.

Kutenga, a female African elephant, was only 27 when she collapsed in her stall at the Philadelphia Zoo in 1991 and died despite heroic efforts to get her to her feet, including trying to lift her with the hook from a tow truck.

THE PHILADELPHIA ZOO'S PETAL -- at 52, the oldest African elephant in a U.S. zoo -- died this morning. The animal staff was unable to determine the cause of death, but tests are being conducted and results are expected over the next few weeks.
