The teams combined for 35 hits and the Tigers maintained their 2 ½-game lead over the Chicago White Sox at the top of the American League Central. Placido Polanco homered and Armando Galarraga picked up his second consecutive win in Detroit's 5-3 win over Oakland Tuesday. Galarraga (5-7) held Oakland to two hits and a run over 6 1/3 innings while striking out five and walking six. Mark Ellis hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for the Athletics, who managed just five hits and lost for the sixth time in their last seven games.
