Craig Anderson stopped 35 shots for his eighth career shutout Saturday when the Colorado Avalanche beat Vancouver 3-0. Wojtek Wolski and Paul Stastny each had a goal and an assist and Darcy Tucker scored the other goal for the Avalanche, who opened the season with two straight wins for the first time since the 2001-02 season.
The Vancouver Canucks have signed goaltender Roberto Luongo to a 12-year contract extension through the 2021-22 season. Luongo, 30, finished 2008-09 with a 33-13-7 record, his fourth consecutive season with at least 30 wins. He established a franchise single-season shutout record (nine) despite playing in only 54 games.
Patrick Kane got his first career playoff hat trick Monday to lead the Chicago Blackhawks to a 7-5 win over Vancouver and a berth in the NHL Western finals. Jonathan Toews added two goals for the Blackhawks, who reached the conference finals for the first time since 1995.
Dave Bolland's power play goal at 14:55 of the third period Saturday secured Chicago's 4-2 win over Vancouver in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals. The Blackhawks will carry a 3-2 lead into Game 6 in Chicago Monday night.
Andrew Ladd tipped a shot past Roberto Luongo 2:52 into overtime Thursday, giving the Chicago Blackhawks a series-tying 2-1 victory over Vancouver. The Canucks appeared ready to take a two-game lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinals, having ridden a shutout effort by Luongo deep into the third period. Chicago tied the game, however, on Martin Havlat's goal with 2:44 to play in regulation and Blackhawks goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin kept his team alive with a series of overtime saves. The winning goal came when Dave Bolland seized control of a loose puck along the right boards and fired a slapshot toward Luongo.
