Rory Sabbatini, passed over by Greg Norman for the International Presidents Cup team, grabbed a share of the first-round lead Thursday at the BMW Championship. Sabbatini shot a 5-under 66 at the Cog Hill Golf Club course to tie Steve Marino for the top spot in the third of the four PGA Tour playoff events. Bo Van Pelt and Marc Leishman were tied for third at 67 and Tiger Woods, who has slipped to second place in the FedEx Cup points race behind Steve Stricker, was among those tied for fifth at 68. The race for the FedEx Cup and the first prize of $10 million has been reduced to 70 players and only 30 of them will survive to take part in the Tour Championship. Sabbatini began this week in 36th place and Marino is in 26th place.

Rory Sabbatini fired a 6-under-par 64 for an overall score of 19-under 261 and a two-shot victory Sunday in the Byron Nelson Championship at Irving, Texas. The title was the fifth on the PGA Tour for the native of South Africa. Sabbatini birdied the 11th hole to take the lead for good, then notched four more birdies coming in. Brian Davis, also with a 64, placed second at 263. D.A.

Jerry Kelly closed with a 1-under-par Sunday and won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans -- his long-awaited third victory on the PGA Tour. Kelly, who had been winless in his previous 200 events, finished at 14-under-par 274, a stroke ahead of Rory Sabbatini (67), Charles Howell III (68) and Charlie Wi (68). David Toms (68), winner of the event in 2001, shared fifth place at 12-under 276 with Steve Marino (70). Kelly won $1.13 million. You know, the 42-year-old Wisconsin native said.
