Eli Whiteside's only hit Wednesday, a sixth-inning grand slam, boosted the San Francisco Giants to a 10-6 win over Houston. Whiteside's first major league homer snapped a 3-3 tie with one out in the bottom of the sixth. One of Pablo Sandoval's three hits, a third-inning two-run single, erased a 3-0 deficit.

The Cleveland Indians purchased the contract of infielder Andy Marte Tuesday from their Class AAA affiliate in Columbus. Marte, 25, takes the roster spot of first baseman Ryan Garko, who was traded to San Francisco Monday.

The San Francisco Giants got first baseman Ryan Garko from the Cleveland Indians Monday for minor league pitcher Scott Barnes. Garko, 28, is hitting .285 with 11 homers and 39 RBI in 78 games this season. He was a third-round draft pick by the Indians in 2003.

Jeremy Sowers pitched seven scoreless innings and Jhonny Peralta had three RBI Saturday to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 10-3 victory over Seattle. Chris Gimenez, Ryan Garko and Asdrubal Cabrera each hit a two-run homer for Cleveland, which has won three games in a row for the first time since May 25-28. Sowers (3-7), recalled from Triple-A prior to the game, allowed just four hits and two walks. Franklin Gutierrez was 2-for-3 with a walk for the Mariners, who have lost three of five. Erik Bedard (5-3), who lasted only three innings, is winless in four starts since coming off the disabled list. Chris Jakubauskas relieved Bedard in the fourth and gave up a two-run homer to Gimenez.
