LONG BEACH, Calif., March 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- One year after announcing his wish for a strong, sustainable national movement to overcome obesity, TED2010 Prize winner Jamie Oliver returned to the TED stage and announced critical developments to meet his "twenty year vision" of fostering permanent change: Jamie Oliver and the American Heart Association (AHA) this morning announced the formation of a partnership to open Food Revolution Kitchens - community-based centers where people can learn basic cooking skills and how to prepare affordable, nutritious meals.
Cookery teachers from 24 Derbyshire secondary schools are to give training to primary staff. The training aims to encourage primary schools to run more practical food lessons with children and to involve their parents.
By Fiona Evans Bradford Council is running the pilot scheme in 90 per cent of the district's schools during the first half-term to boost the take- up of school meals.Council leader Kris Hopkins said: "Jamie Oliver highlighted the need for school meals to be both healthy and delicious, and I am pleased to say Bradford has been doing that for many years."Having dinner at school gives children an opportunity to socialise with other pupils and develop friendships outside of the classroom, as well as giving them a healthy and nutritious meal in the middle of the day."Coun Hopkins, who will be serving free meals at Steeton Primary School tomorrow, added: "I am looking forward to meeting the children and finding out what they think of the meals."These are children who are starting school for the first time and we are hoping they will continue to enjoy school meals for the rest of their school life."Children just need to turn up to take advantage of the free food and parents are not required
