The Los Angeles Angels have lost reliever Scot Shields to season-ending left knee surgery. The team's most valuable relief pitcher in 2008 had been plagued by patella tendinitis this season before deciding to undergo the surgery, performed Tuesday by orthopedist Dr.
Joe Saunders and two relievers combined on a six-hitter Wednesday, carrying the Los Angeles Angels to a 3-0 win over Seattle. Saunders (6-2), who allowed a season-high seven runs in his previous outing, threw 101 pitches while giving up four hits over seven innings.
Franklin Gutierrez doubled and scored the winning run in the 10th inning on a throwing error in Seattle's 3-2 win Tuesday over the Los Angeles Angels. Gutierrez began Seattle's at-bat with a double off the wall in center. Yuniesky Betancourt dropped a sacrifice bunt down the third-base line.
