Work-related injury and disease is killing an estimated 1000 or more New Zealand workers a year and costing the country upwards of $4.3 billion, according to a report released earlier this year by the National Occupational Health and Advisory Committee (NOHSAC).In what is the first comprehensive attempt to define the Burden of Occupational Disease and Injury in New Zealand, NOHSAC put the estimated annual toll at 700-1000 deaths from occupational disease, particularly cancer, respiratory disease and ischaemic heart disease; 100 deaths from occupational injury; 17,000-20,000 new cases of work-related disease; and about 200,000 occupational accidents resulting in ACC claims.
