Biplane Design Could Break Sound Barrier
2012-03-15 12:25:14

MIT researchers have found a way to produce a cheaper, quieter and fuel-efficient biplane that is capable of traveling at supersonic speeds. The team has shown through a computer model that a modified biplane can produce significantly less drag than a conventional single-wing aircraft at supersonic cruise speeds. Qiqi Wang, an assistant professor of aeronautics and astronautics, said less drag would allow the plane to require less fuel, making it cheaper to fly, and would also make it...

This word is apparently from a confusion of two similar Dutch words: 'mallemerok,' a foolish woman, and 'mallemok,' a name for some persons among the crew of a whaling vessel.
