New Alabama men's basketball Coach Anthony Grant was introduced Thursday at a packed on-campus news conference in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Grant, 42, left Virginia Commonwealth last month and succeeds Mark Gottfried, who resigned in January. He led the VCU Rams to a 24-10 record, a CAA title and a first-round defeat to UCLA at the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

Anthony Grant has decided to leave Virginia Commonwealth and become the basketball coach at Alabama, the Birmingham News reported Thursday. Grant led VCU to post-season appearances in each of the last two seasons.

Assistant coach Phillip Pearson was named interim head coach to finish out the season and will make his debut Thursday at Arkansas. Director of Athletics Mal Moore said in a statement that he accepted the resignation. I respect Mark's decision and will begin immediately working on a permanent replacement, Moore said.
