Curiosity Finds ‘Different’ Jake Rocks
2012-10-11 15:51:08

Lee Rannals for redOrbit.com — Your Universe Online NASA announced during a teleconference on Thursday that one particular rock its newest rover Curiosity has reached out and touched has a more dynamic composition than expected. Engineers used two instruments on Curiosity to study the chemical makeup of the rock, known as "Jake Matijevic," which could help tell a story about unseen environments and planetary processes. "This rock is a close match in chemical composition to an...

Curiosity Makes Contact With Martian Rock Using Robotic Arm For First Time

[WATCH VIDEO] Lawrence LeBlond for redOrbit.com - Your Universe Online After NASA picked out a suitable rock to study on the Red Planet, the agency´s Curiosity rover took a little stroll to the Martian sample and, for the first time, used its robotic arm to make contact with the otherworldly artifact. The rock, named “Jake Matijevic,” after the late rover engineer of the same name, will be studied by Curiosity to determine what chemical elements make up its composition....

Arm Tests Nearly Complete For Mars Rover Curiosity
2012-09-13 07:48:17

NASA's Mars Curiosity team has almost finished robotic arm tests in preparation for the rover to touch and examine its first Martian rock. Tests with the 7-foot (2.1-meter) arm have allowed the mission team to gain confidence in the arm's precise maneuvering in Martian temperature and gravity conditions. During these activities, Curiosity has remained at a site it reached by its most recent drive on Sept. 5. The team will resume driving the rover this week and use its cameras to seek the...

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity, will carry a next generation, onboard "chemical element reader" to measure the chemical ingredients in Martian rocks and soil. The instrument is one of 10 that will help the rover in its upcoming mission to determine the past and present habitability of a specific area on the Red Planet. Launch is scheduled between Nov. 25 and Dec. 18, 2011, with landing in August 2012. The Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) instrument, designed by...
