Carlo Janka of Switzerland skied to victory in the men's giant slalom Friday at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in France. Janka edged Austria's Benjamin Raich by .71 seconds and American Ted Ligety came in a fraction of a second behind Raich. Janka turned in a combined 2 minutes, 18.82 seconds in the two-race event.
Germany's Kathrin Hoelzl edged Tina Maze of Slovenia Thursday to win the women's giant slalom event at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in France. Hoelzl, ranked 13th in the world going into the Worlds, put together a total time of 2 minutes, 3.49 seconds in her two runs, just .09 seconds ahead of Maze. Canadian John Kucera edged Didier Cuche of Swizterland by 0.04 seconds Saturday to win the men's downhill at the World Championships in France. Kucera, 24, made a nearly flawless 2:07.01 run down the icy course at Val d'Isere to become the first Canadian to ever win a world title in the men's downhill.

Officials in Garmisch, Germany, called off Saturday's World Cup ski races due to heavy fog and rescheduled them for Sunday. The visibility on the course was too obscured and led to the postponement of the women's super G until Sunday and the outright cancellation of the men's downhill in the final event before next week's world championships in France. American Marco Sullivan said fog had been an issue during this week's training runs; however, the mist had been clearing up by afternoon.
