Revision To Rules To Decipher Color In Dinosaurs Suggests Connection Between Color And Physiology
2014-02-13 12:36:46

University of Texas at Austin New research that revises the rules allowing scientists to decipher color in dinosaurs may also provide a tool for understanding the evolutionary emergence of flight and changes in dinosaur physiology prior to its origin. In a survey comparing the hair, skin, fuzz and feathers of living terrestrial vertebrates and fossil specimens, a research team from The University of Texas at Austin, the University of Akron, the China University of Geosciences and four...

Deciphering microscopic clues hidden within fossils, scientists have uncovered the vibrant colors that adorned a feathered dinosaur extinct for 150 million years, a Yale University-led research team reports online Feb. 4 in the journal Science. Unlike recently published work from China that inferred the existence of two types of melanin pigments in various species of feathered dinosaurs, the Science study analyzed color-imparting structures called melanosomes from an entire fossil of a single...

An international group of scientists have uncovered a new type of flying reptile, they reported on Tuesday. Writing in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, researchers from the University of Leicester, and the Geological Institute, Beijing documented evidence of a new type of pterosaur. Scientists said that the discovery fills in the large evolutionary gap between two different groups of pterosaurs: primitive long-tailed forms and their descendants, advanced...

Fossil experts say the stunning remains of a "four-winged" dinosaur have confirmed that birds owe their ancestry to two-footed dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago, AFP reported. The well-preserved fossil of a bird-like dinosaur called Anchiornis huxleyi may be the deciding factor, according to Xing Xu of the Chinese Academy of Science in Beijing. Based on incomplete fossils, A. huxleyi was thought to have been a near contemporary of Archaeopteryx, the first recognized bird, which flew...

Anchiornis, meaning "near bird", is a genus of small, feathered dinosaur. The type species A. Huxleyi is named in honor of Thomas Henry Huxley, a scientist known for his early studies in the biological evolutionary relationship between birds and dinosaurs. The type specimen was described by paleontologist Xu Xing in 2008. The remains of Anchiornis were discovered in western Liaoning, China in sedimentary lake deposits. The age of the dinosaur is uncertain, but it is likely that it lived...
