Image 1 - The Mystery Of The Missing Moon
2011-09-08 06:52:06

As early as Sept. 8th, NASA's GRAIL mission will blast off to uncover some of the mysteries beneath the surface of the Moon. That cratered gray exterior hides some tantalizing things — even, perhaps, a long-lost companion. If a paper published recently in the journal Nature* is right, two moons once graced our night skies. The proposition has not been proven, but has drawn widespread attention. "It's an intriguing idea," says David Smith, GRAIL's deputy principal...

Former astronaut Edgar Mitchell says a camera he brought back from the 1971 Apollo 14 moon mission was given to him by NASA despite the space agency's lawsuit asking for it back, according to a recent Associated Press report. Mitchell lawyer Donald Jacobson wants NASA to dismiss its case, saying that a four-year statute of limitations has long since run out and that there are no records to disprove his contention that the camera was a gift. "Dr. Edgar Mitchell is an American hero,"...

Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, is currently locked in a legal battle with NASA over who owns a movie camera that flew aboard the Apollo 14 mission with him in 1971. Mitchell apparently decided he deserved a souvenir and took the lunar movie camera home with him after his mission ended. Then, 40 years later, he tried to auction off the camera. "Objects from the lunar trips to the moon were ultimately mounted and then presented to the astronauts as a gift after they had...

Rumbling, cramped, heavy and lacking a big field of view, the M113 wouldn't seem to be a good candidate for an ambulance. It doesn't even have a steering wheel. But it has something essential for a NASA rescue mission at the launch pad: armor. Basically a bunker on tracks, the M113 is a Vietnam-era armored personnel carrier that offers the astronauts a safe vehicle to get out of danger. It also offers firefighters heavy protection in case they have to go into danger to retrieve the flight...
