Undersea Explorer, Scott Cassell Unveils Alarming New Revelations on Shark Species at Brink of Extinction during World-Record Dive Attempt in California Los
More than 50 percent of wide-ranging oceanic shark species are threatened with extinction as a result of overfishing, according to a new study.
It's hard to study a creature when you only catch fleeting glimpses of it. Up until recently, that was one of the big stumbling blocks for marine biologists and ecologists, but advances in electronic tracking technology have allowed them to peer farther across, and deeper under, the surface of the oceans than ever before.
Electronic tags broadcasting from the dorsal fins of salmon sharks reveal that these top predators migrate from the glacial waters of Alaska to the warm seas off Hawaii, according to a new study in the journal Science. The salmon shark's ability to survive such a broad range of thermal conditions is attributed to high levels of specialized proteins that keep its heart muscle cells beating at very low temperatures, say the study's authors.
The Silky shark, Carcharhinus falciformis, is a large pelagic shark of tropical and warm temperate seas. Distribution This species is found worldwide in tropical and warm temperate > 73.4 °F (> 23 °C) seas. It is usually pelagic, but sometimes approaches the coast, especially at remote offshore islands. It is found to depths of at least 1640.42 ft (500 m). Appearance This shark has a large 'typical' shark body, slender with 'silky' smooth skin. It is brown-grey dorsally and...
The blue shark, Prionace glauca is a carcharhinid shark which is found in the deep waters of the world's temperate and tropical oceans. They prefer cooler waters and are not found, for example, in the Gulf of Mexico, the Adriatic or Red Sea. Blue sharks are known to migrate long distances, from New England to South America for example. Although generally lethargic, they are capable of moving very quickly if the need arises. Blue sharks are viviparous and are noted for their large litters of...
