NEW YORK -- Scientists are learning more about what appears to be one of the biggest meat-eating dinosaurs known, a two-legged beast whose bones were found several years ago in the fossil-rich Patagonia region of Argentina. One expert called the discovery the first substantial evidence of group living by large meat-eaters other than tyrannosaurs like T. rex. The creature, which apparently measured more than 40 feet long, is called Mapusaurus roseae. The discovery of Mapusaurus included bones...

Megalaosaurus, meaning “Great Lizard”, from Greek megalo, meaning ‘big’ or ‘tall’ and sauros, meaning “lizard”, is a genus of large and meat-eating theropod dinosaurs of the Middle Jurassic period of Europe. It’s significant as the first genus of dinosaur, outside of birds, to be described and named. Megalosaurus might have been the first dinosaur to be described in scientific literature. Part of a bone was recovered from a limestone quarry at Cornwell by Chipping Norton,...

Saurophaganax, meaning "lizard-eating monster," is a genus of allosaurid dinosaur from the Late Jurassic Period and lived in what is now North America. It comes from the Morrison Formation. It was discovered in the panhandle of Oklahoma, with more possible fossil material found in northern New Mexico. The identification of Saurophaganax has been disputed fro some time. While being described as its own genus, it has also been described as a species of Allosaurus (A. maximus). The most...

Sinraptor, meaning "Chinese thief," is a genus of theropod dinosaur from the Late Jurassic Period. It was discovered by Philip J. Currie and Xian Zhao in the Shishugou Formation during an expedition to the northwestern Chinese desert in 1987. The type species, S. dongi, honors paleontologist Dong Zhiming. It was described by Currie and Zhao in 1994. A second species, originally named Yangchuanosaurus hepingensis by Gao in 1992, may actually represent a second species of Sinraptor. Whether...

Torvosaurus, meaning "savage lizard," is a genus of large theropod dinosaur from the late Kimmeridgian to early Tithonian stage of the Late Jurassic Period. Fossils of Torvosaurus have been found in North America and Portugal. It was first discovered by James Jensen and Kenneth Stadtman in the Morrison Formation at Dry Mesa Quarry, Colorado in 1972. The genus and type species, T. tanneri, were named and described by Jensen and Peter M. Galton in 1979. The type specimen was further...

Yangchuanosaurus is a genus of theropod dinosaur from the Oxfordian (and possibly Kimmeridgian) stage of the Late Jurassic Period, and comes from the Upper Shaximiao Formation. A nearly complete skeleton was discovered in June 1977 by a construction worker during the building of the Shangyou Reservoir Dam in the Yongchuan District. This genus was considered the same as Metriacanthosaurus by Gregory S. Paul in 1988, but this has not received the support of other paleontologists. The...
